Tabor Boy Documentary Featured In The Providence Journal


Peter Mello attributes his success in life to his high school years at Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass., a college-preparatory school where the Tabor Boy, a 92-foot sail-training schooner, is a seafaring classroom.

“Hardly a day goes by when I don’t think of the success I’ve had and attributed it to the time I spent aboard the ship,” Mello said by phone Friday while out for a walk near his home in Mattapoisett, Mass.

Tabor Boy, a 100 foot schooner owned by Tabor Academy in Marion, has an educational program aboard. For over 50 years, the schooner has sailed with student crews in charge. This requires teamwork, accountability and leadership, while at the same time enhancing their math and science skills. On The Point, we hear of a documentary film about Tabor Boy, and tales of how the sailing experience has helped transform adventurous teenagers into confident young adults. Guests on the program are John Rice, and Captain James Geil. Mindy Todd hosts.
